Discernment Therapy & Coaching for Affairs

Discernment gives you a structured, supportive space to slow things down, step out of the emotional intensity, and honestly explore what is happening and what you want for your life.

When you are engaged in an affair, the path forward can feel confusing, emotionally overwhelming, and filled with competing loyalties, desires, and fears. Discernment work provides a safe and confidential space to slow down and step outside the intensity of the situation so you can begin to understand what is happening, what you truly want, and what direction is most aligned with your values and long-term well-being. Rather than rushing toward a decision, discernment invites honest reflection, greater clarity, and a deeper understanding of the choices before you. Let me hold that space for you.

Discernment is:

A confidential space to explore ambivalence.

An opportunity to understand patterns and motivations.

A process for taking responsibility without rushing into a decision.

Focusing on clarity, agency and intentional choice.

Discernment isn’t:

Simple black checkmark icon

A professional deciding whether you should stay or leave.

Simple black checkmark icon

A justification for continuing an affair indefinitely.

Simple black checkmark icon

A way to obtain permission for an affair.

A guarantee that reconciliation or separation will be the right outcome.

Making a major relationship decision while immersed in an affair can make it difficult to distinguish genuine relational incompatibility from the intensity of the affair. These are areas we can explore:

  • compartmentalization
  • idealization
  • novelty and intensity
  • secrecy
  • emotional escape
  • unmet needs
  • attachment dynamics
  • fantasy about an alternative life

THREE PATH FRAMEWORK

Are you torn between staying in your marriage, leaving, or continuing to live in the uncertainty of an affair? Discernment gives you a structured, supportive space to slow things down, step out of the emotional intensity, and honestly explore what is happening and what you want for your life. My goal is not to push you toward reconciliation or separation, but to help you gain clarity on what you want. We will work together on a three path framework.

As we explore these paths we can look at:

  • What am I actually seeking through this affair?
  • I’m feeling so much shame and I need help?
  • What needs, wounds, or vulnerabilities am I bringing into both relationships?
  • I don’t know whether I want to save my relationship or leave. I just know I can’t keep living in this limbo?
  • Am I seeing my affair partner realistically, or primarily through the intensity of an affair?
  • What would I need to take responsibility for if I chose to stay?
  • What would I need to grieve if I chose to leave?
  • If the affair ended tomorrow, what would I want for my marriage/relationship?
  • If there were no affair partner in the picture, would I still want to leave?
  • Am I willing to tolerate the discomfort of making an honest decision?
  • What kind of partner do I want to be, regardless of which relationship I choose?
  • Affairs vs. Compulsive Sexual Behaviours

An affair may involve a specific emotional or sexual relationship outside the committed partnership and can occur for many different reasons. Having an affair does not, by itself, mean that someone has a sex or pornography addiction.

Compulsive sexual behaviours, however, typically involve a repetitive pattern of sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviours that feel increasingly difficult to control, despite negative consequences.

Understanding the difference matters. Rather than immediately applying a label, our work explores the pattern, function, frequency, loss of control, consequences, and underlying emotional factors associated with the behaviour.

The goal is not to begin with a label, it is to understand what is actually happening and determine the most appropriate path forward.

Finding Clarity Without Judgment

The goal is not to remove responsibility or justify an affair. It is to help you move beyond shame and confusion so you can make thoughtful, intentional decisions that are aligned with your values and the person you want to be.

You don’t have to have the answers before reaching out. Sometimes the first step is simply creating a safe place to begin sorting through the questions.

Take the First Step

Taking the first step does not mean you have to have all the answers. It simply means giving yourself the space to be honest about where you are, what you are feeling, and what you need to understand before making decisions that may shape your future. In a confidential, non-judgmental setting, we can begin to sort through the complexity, clarify what matters most to you, and help you move forward with greater intention and clarity.
